The first weekend of December every year marks our annual trek to Gallup, New Mexico for the Red Rock Balloon Rally, this year was the 32nd annual. It is a 3 day event, the first day Ernie gets to fly the cloud hopper since none of the sponsors come out on Friday. Ernie played in the canyons for a while then hopped up and went over to the next valley to the north where many of the balloons were causing road blocks as they landed.
Friday night is the glow in the rocks. Conditions didn’t look good as we left the hotel but the wind ended up calming down for this popular event.
Saturday is our dawn patrol day. We were able to borrow some crew from a friend this year since our sponsor didn’t show up to fly with us like he did last year. After landing we were able to help other balloonist maneuver around for better photo-ops or landing.
This year was a ‘warm’ year for the Gallup rally, it was in the 20’s in the morning but that is still a little cold for those of us from southern Cali including the girls who get to wear their Fido Fleece jackets.
